One such trailblazer is Thando Mketi, the Managing Director at SINETHEMBA, a leader in Industrial and Medicinal Hemp.
Thando's journey into this industry has been one of passion, dedication, and a commitment to making a positive impact. We had the pleasure of speaking with Thando to learn more about her inspiring story.
Thando Mketi’s introduction to the cannabis industry came in 2019 when she was approached by a company in Lesotho to write a business plan for their cannabis operations. Despite knowing little about the plant at the time, Thando's research sparked a deep fascination. “I was highly fascinated and couldn't stop wanting to know more about it,” she recalls. This curiosity led her to apply for a hemp permit with the Department of Agriculture in South Africa in 2021. Since then, her life has been transformed. Thando’s journey is a testament to the power of following one’s passion and seizing opportunities.
A Conversation with Thando Mketi: Insights from a Trailblazer
Q1: What inspired you to join the cannabis industry, and how has it changed your life?
"In 2019, I was approached by a company in Lesotho to write a business plan for cannabis as they were requesting funding from other countries. I knew nothing about the plant and had to do my research. I was highly fascinated and couldn't stop wanting to know more about it. In 2021, when I heard we could apply for hemp with the Department of Agriculture, I jumped at the opportunity. Since then, my life has changed forever. I met more people who believed in this amazing plant, got my permit, leased land, and haven't looked back."
Q2: Can you share a moment when your work in cannabis made a positive impact?
"We are currently employing over 50 workers, and that absolutely warms my heart to know that we are making a difference in our community."
Can you share a personal favorite motivational quote?
"Your vision pulls you when you are doing something that you believe in and are passionate about, then even the sky is not the limit."
SINETHEMBA is leasing a 30-hectare farm in Magaliesburg, where they are actively cultivating hemp. This hemp is processed into hemp seed oil and fiber, with the remaining product supplied to their off-takers. In addition to their agricultural efforts, SINETHEMBA has launched a hemp cosmetics range, specifically designed to meet the needs of women who prioritize natural beauty.
